Local infrastructure efforts progressed with significant milestones in major road initiatives. The City of Austin held a groundbreaking ceremony for the Burnet Road Corridor Project on March 5 at Q2 Stadium, marking the start of construction from West Koenig Lane to MoPac Expressway.[1][2] Improvements include ADA-compliant curb ramps, shared-use paths, pedestrian hybrid beacons, traffic signal upgrades, drainage enhancements, and realignment of Burnet Lane to boost safety and operations.

“Burnet Road is a vital connector serving residents, small businesses, employers and transit riders from the outskirts all the way down to the heart of Central Austin,” said Assistant City Manager Mike Rogers.[1]

Anna Martin, assistant director at Austin Transportation and Public Works, emphasized the project's long-term value: “This plan has been designed to meet the needs of today and future generations,” adding, “This project will improve mobility for all users.”[1] Funded by the 2016 Austin Mobility Bond, the initiative addresses traffic, drainage, and accessibility challenges amid growing development near Q2 Stadium.

I-35 and MoPac Updates

On the Interstate 35 Capital Express Central project, TxDOT permanently closed the Riverside Drive and Holly Street exits near downtown to facilitate a new Riverside Drive bypass lane, enhancing congestion relief and bike-pedestrian features.[3] Meanwhile, the Central Texas Regional Mobility Authority launched a virtual public hearing on March 9 for the MoPac South project, proposing express lanes along eight miles from Cesar Chavez Street to Slaughter Lane; an in-person session is scheduled for March 24.[4]

Other area projects, such as the Old Fitzhugh Road Improvement Project, are set for tentative construction starting this spring.[5] These developments signal steady advancement amid ongoing traffic management.

Looking ahead, the MoPac South in-person hearing on March 24 offers residents a chance to comment before the May 3 deadline, while major initiatives like Oak Hill Parkway approach mid-year completions, promising improved mobility in the near term.
