Brownsville is seeing movement on multiple roadway initiatives, including the imminent start of major reconstructions and progress toward phase completions on key arteries.

Coffee Road Reconstruction Set to Begin

The City of Brownsville announced on March 5 that reconstruction of Coffee Road between Ruben M. Torres Boulevard and Paredes Line Road will commence on March 23.1 The $4.52 million effort, with the city funding $3.23 million for street and drainage work and the Brownsville Public Utilities Board covering $1.28 million for water and wastewater upgrades, includes converting the rural roadway to an urban street featuring a center turn lane, ADA-compliant sidewalk, shared-use path, and new storm drainage.1 The project is projected to last 12 months, weather permitting, with temporary traffic adjustments and potential delays anticipated.1

International Boulevard Nears Phase Reopening

Construction on the Texas Department of Transportation's $21 million International Boulevard project, spanning from Interstate 69E to State Highway 48, continues at 55% completion.2 Phase 1 work at the Cleveland and Roosevelt intersection is wrapping up, with reopening expected in early March to restore business access and reduce congestion.2 The full project, involving concrete pavement replacement, storm drainage upgrades, sidewalks, and signage improvements, remains on track for September 2026 completion, subject to weather.2

Other Notable Developments

Under the city's capital improvement plan, Wild Rose Lane road construction is slated for completion this month, while Dennet Road construction is scheduled to begin in March.3 Separately, residents along Dana Avenue have voiced frustration over the long-delayed widening project, citing potholes, narrow lanes, and 17 accidents this year amid heavy school traffic.4

"This year it's been terrible because we've had 17 accidents out there," said Cameron County Precinct 2 Commissioner Joey Lopez, noting the road's narrowness and traffic volume.4

The $20 million Dana Avenue initiative, with TxDOT providing $18 million and the city and county each contributing $1 million, has been in planning since 2018 but faces ongoing funding and other hurdles.4 As these projects move forward, drivers should prepare for continued lane restrictions and watch for updates on timelines, particularly with Coffee Road and Dennet Road activities ramping up in the near term.
